If you’re not on page 1, no-one’s looking at you.

Search engine users want — nay, expect — fast, highly relevant results. Realistically speaking, people just don’t have time to be scrolling. Search engine technology has come so far that the very idea of not finding what you’re looking for until page 2 is the stuff of myth, a tale from back in Ye Days of Olde…

“O Grandfather, dearest Grandfather, do tell us of the hardships of the past?”

“’Twas a tough, mad world. I once Googled how to spiralise your avocado like a pro and couldn’t find anything remotely relevant until result #17! By the time I’d found what I needed, I had to reset the lighting so I could Instagram my lunch!”

Business owners are frequently tempted to shell out a lot of cash on paid advertising. Whilst this might generate some decent leads in the short term, it is often not a tenable or cost-effective strategy that can be maintained over a long period. By implementing an organic online marketing strategy, in which SEO is your first and foremost method for lead generation, you set in place a solid groundwork from which to build your online brand identity and reputation.

But just because you’re currently struggling with ranking, doesn’t mean you’re doomed to an eternal purgatory in the mythological wasteland that is page 2 of Google’s search results, with only the tumbleweed and the crickets for company. Introducing… SEO. Introducing… OWO.

What is SEO?

Search engine optimisation. Next!

…Just kidding. In a nutshell, SEO is a strategy to increase the appeal of your website to search engines, and thus boost the visibility of your brand, your content and your website to search engine users. Visitors who reach your site in this way are referred to as organic traffic. There’s a myriad of adjustments you can implement on your website in order to increase your organic traffic, which can be boiled down to two categories: what you change on-page and what alterations can be made off-page.

On-page SEO

There’s a heck of a lot you can implement within your own web property in order to increase organic traffic to your site.

  • Implementing meta tags
  • Conducting keyword research
  • Enhancing user experience
  • Increasing loading speed
  • Running a tech audit and identifying areas of your site that are either not running as well as they should be or that are downright broken and in dire need of fixing
  • Creating relevant, useful, engaging content of varying lengths and genre (article, white paper, blog, infographic, listicle)
  • Taking full advantage of multimedia resources
  • Adapting design to multiple devices
  • Boosting numbers of links, both internal and external (more on that later…)
  • Optimising images and implement alt tags
  • Sprinkling in some enticing call-to-action buttons!

Search engines are robots. You have to communicate with them in a language they understand. No matter what you think your page is about, search engines need objective, tangible data to tell users what your page is actually about. If there’s a gap in this line of communication, you can lose organic traffic.

Search engine algorithms reward websites that clearly signal their content. On-page SEO allows you to draw in organic traffic by iterating exactly what service you provide — then helps you keep users on the page long enough that they convert (perform a desired action, such as filling out a form, clicking a button or purchasing a product).

Off-page SEO

If you build it, they will come. But whilst Field of Dreams is undoubtedly an iconic piece of American cinema (and whatever happened to Mr. Kevin Costner?), its most famous quote doesn’t translate quite as well when it comes to the realm of digital marketing. You can spend an unlimited amount of time and energy on making your site look the bee’s knees, but if people don’t know about it or how to get there, it’s all for nothing.

Never fear, though — there’s a huge amount you can be doing beyond the boundaries of your own web property in order to increase organic traffic to your site.

  • Link-building: linking to authoritative sites within your niche or industry — and letting them know, so they link back to you — in order to increase a search engine’s perception of your business’s reputation and esteem
  • Establishing yourself as a leader in what you do by giving interviews, quotes, Q&As, and by establishing a solid, dynamic and active social media presence
  • Connecting with online influencers and gaining invaluable endorsements from important, inspirational figures from within your industry and even beyond
  • Authoring guest blogs and posts on relevant and popular sites frequented by online users whom you wish to target

What does all this off-page SEO boil down to? It’s actually very straightforward. Let the world know that you know what you’re talking about — and that you’ve got the stuff to prove it.

Why is SEO important?

You snooze, you lose.

81% of customers and 94% of B2B buyers will perform searches online before making a purchase. Brands that lack an authentic and identifiable online personality and a strong, grounded reputation on search engines will inevitably fall by the wayside.

No matter your industry, your product or the size of your company, a strong SEO strategy allows you to boost your website right to the forefront of a search engine results page. This is a tried and trusted method of reliably increasing organic traffic to your site by catching the attention of prospective customers and enticing them into your sales funnel.

Let’s break this down further (cue Top of the Pops theme)…

5 reasons SEO is crucial to the success of your business

1) It’ll teach you the web works

The internet is a forever-changing environment. The rules are not set in stone. By gaining a deep comprehension of how search engines interpret your site depending on the changes you implement thereon, you’ll get ahead of the game.

2) It’s cost-effective

I hear you: Oh sure, ‘cost-effective’ — that’s sales jargon for ‘does bugger all’! Not true. In the grand scheme of your business’s budget, SEO is a remarkably and demonstrably good investment. An expertly implemented SEO strategy has the power to transform your online presence, boost your turnover and build a watertight reputation within your industry. SEO is not a marketing cost in the traditional sense. Fundamentally, it’s business savvy.

3) It’s long-term

SEO takes patience. If you’re looking for some hare-brained get-rich-quick scheme, you’d best look elsewhere. It takes roughly 3–6 months to see real, tangible increases in organic traffic after dipping your toe into the world of SEO strategising, but once you’ve got a foot on the ladder, the sky’s the limit (that’s some excellent linking of metaphors right there). A structured and carefully considered SEO strategy will pay you dividends for years to come.

4) It’s quantifiable

Unlike paid advertising, SEO doesn’t offer an easily calculable ROI. What it does provide, though, is objective measurements accessible by informed tracking and analytics of user activity on your site over time. SEO is all about understanding trends. What did we do last month that led to this spike in organic traffic? What can we do next month to avoid a repeat of that dip in conversion? Get your head around online analytics and answers you shall find. Data don’t lie.

5) It sheds light on fresh and lucrative opportunities

High-quality SEO will always find a way of not only discovering but leveraging new means of getting your brand to stand out from the crowd. A well-developed SEO strategy is the only way of truly getting inside a brand, identifying what its unique selling points really are (’cause they won’t always be the ones you think!) and letting your business shine. Don’t go on hearsay or your own subjective opinions. Garner invaluable information from the only people who matter: the customers — and, perhaps even more crucially, the prospective customers who aren’t converting.

Okay, so that’s all very well and good. But I hear your cries: Who the heck are you to tell me this? What are your credentials, and how can you help my business? What’s this 2-day course I hear tell of? Will there be biscuits?

We are the Only Way Online team.

We’re a team of SEO experts highly skilled at what we do. We’re dynamic. We get stuff done. And we understand what a dangerous wilderness the World Wide Web can seem to any business, no matter your standing, your experience or your technical and business nous.

Not every business has the budget to contract an SEO agency. Some businesses have good online marketing in place already. And some businesses have very brainy individuals at the helm (that’s you!) who just need a little training on all things SEO in order to see their organic traffic soar!

(And yes, there will be biscuits.)

Meet your teachers

Only Way Online’s 2-day DIY SEO course in London will be brought to you straight from the horse’s mouth, from the guys who do it day in, day out, and who know how to get the results their clients desire. But don’t just take our word for it! Check out what others have said about us and our work!

The Big Cheese (AKA Neil Sheth)

Neil is the CEO and director of Only Way Online. His background is in business consultancy within the investment banking industry, and he has over a decade’s worth of experience in digital marketing. Neil is the epitome of a business leader, commercially minded, inspiring and a powerful speaker. His depth of knowledge about the innermost workings of digital marketing and his ability to strategise are second to none. When he’s not coming up with one crazy business scheme after another, Neil enjoys taking his 2-year-old Sienna swimming, listening to podcasts (it’s the only thing that’ll get him to go on a run) and heading up North to cheer on Man United (but let’s not judge him too harshly on that…)

The Tech Wizard (AKA Seth Carter)

Seth hails from the US Deep South and is a brilliant and unassuming tech-head (although maybe don’t say that to his face). Seth’s foray into digital marketing started when he was building e-commerce websites whilst still a student. He spent several years working in Hong Kong and is fluent in both Mandarin and Cantonese (showoff). Seth is OWO’s in-house expert on all things tech. When he’s not analysing website architecture, optimising meta tags or amusing the rest of the team with his dry American witticisms, Seth can generally be found unwinding on his jazz bass. (Playing it, that is, not sitting on it).

The One with the Words (AKA Joseph Bennett)

Joseph is a Brummie-Devonian hybrid with a passion for all things lexical. He is the lead copywriter at Only Way Online and is dedicated to creating content which is engaging, informative and entertaining. Joseph somewhat fell into SEO after studying for a Master’s degree in the evolutionary psychology of dating behaviour and going on to work as a copywriter and assistant matchmaker at an elite introductions agency. When he’s not experiencing palpitations at the sight of a misplaced semicolon or smugly removing an erroneous apostrophe, Joseph is a nationally rated Scrabble player and makes casual appearances on teatime classic Countdown (double showoff).
